A majority of Finns support reducing the European Union’s technological and economic dependence on both China and the United States, according to a new survey by the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra and the Finnish Business and Policy Forum EVA.
The survey found that 77 percent of respondents believe Europe should reduce its dependence on the US, while a majority also supported reducing technological dependence on China – even if it could slow climate action.
Support for strengthening European self-sufficiency was also high, with 79 percent backing increased investment in critical technologies such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
The survey additionally showed broad support for developing new partnerships with emerging economies such as India, Brazil and Vietnam to reduce dependence on China.
The survey was conducted in March 2026 among 2,047 respondents in Finland.
