The 2025 Right Livelihood Award has been presented to activists from Myanmar and Taiwan as well as Sudan and the Pacific Islands, for their efforts in democracy, human rights, and climate justice. The annual prize is awarded in Stockholm, highlighting Sweden’s role as a global hub for honoring defenders of human rights and sustainability.
Justice for Myanmar, a covert group of activists, was recognized for exposing the international financial and corporate networks that support the country’s military government.
Taiwan’s Audrey Tang, a civic technologist and former digital minister, was honored for advancing the social use of digital technology to strengthen democracy and combat disinformation.
Other laureates include the Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change and lawyer Julian Aguon, who brought the call for climate justice to the world’s highest court, as well as Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms network, which provides community-based aid amid war and state collapse.
Founded in 1980 by Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull, the Right Livelihood Award has previously honored Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other global figures. The 2025 awards will be presented on 2 December in Stockholm, just days before the Nobel Prizes are announced.
