Nordic embassies urge citizens in Thailand to stay alert after Myanmar earthquake

Following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in central Myanmar on Thursday 28 March 2025, the Danish, Finnish, and Swedish embassies in Bangkok have issued advisories urging their citizens in Thailand to remain cautious and follow local guidance.

Although the epicenter was near Mandalay, the tremors were felt strongly across Thailand, including in Bangkok. Local infrastructure and internet connectivity may be affected, and aftershocks remain a possibility. One tall public  building under construction collapsed, leaving upwards of 70 workers trapped in the debris.

Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain and the MRT subway stopped operating while checking for damages. and all air traffic to and from Bangkok and domestic airports was suspended, causing chaos in the airport where people were waiting to board planes. All schools were ordered closed as well. The government declared Bangkok a disaster area and mobilized the armed forces.

The Finnish Embassy noted that its opening hours are temporarily affected due to the earthquake, and updates on resumption of normal services will follow.

There has been no public statement yet from the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok at the time of writing.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs was not aware of any Danes having been seriously injured.

Citizens of Bangkok evacuated their buildings on Friday as the earthquake struck. Fearing aftershocks, they waited outside – in the shade – for a sign of clearing to return to their buildings.
