Philippines province explores electric “flying” ferries with Swedish firm

A stretch of coastline in Bataan could soon become a testing ground for a new kind of sea travel that quite literally lifts above the water.

In a recent meeting, local officials and Swedish marine technology company Candela explored how electric hydrofoiling vessels might reshape coastal transport in the province, Manila Standard reports.

Abet Garcia met with representatives of Swedish maritime innovator Candela to discuss the possible introduction of next-generation ferries and water transport systems.

Garcia said the discussions centered on electric hydrofoiling boats designed to travel faster, quieter, and with lower environmental impact than conventional vessels.

“In our meeting with representatives of Candela, a Swedish company known for its hydrofoiling electric boats and ferries, we discussed innovative maritime transportation technologies and the possibility of adopting them in our province,” Garcia said.

The technology uses underwater wings to lift the vessel above the surface while in motion. This reduces drag, allowing for higher efficiency, lower energy use, and smoother travel even in challenging waters.

For a coastal province like Bataan, where shipping routes, tourism, and inter-island connectivity play a growing role, the potential applications were a key focus of the discussion.

Officials suggested that such systems could support more sustainable transport links while also boosting economic and tourism activity along the province’s shoreline.
