Health authorities in both Singapore and Denmark are monitoring residents linked to the hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. This comes after several passengers died following the voyage.
In Singapore, two residents are currently isolated at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) after travelling on the ship and later sharing a flight with a confirmed hantavirus patient who died in South Africa. Singapore’s Communicable Diseases Agency said one of the men has mild symptoms, while the other remains asymptomatic.
Meanwhile in Denmark, a Danish passenger from the same cruise ship has entered self-isolation after returning home in late April. Danish health authorities said the person currently shows no symptoms and poses no risk to the public, but officials have prepared a hospital response plan as a precaution.
The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has so far been linked to eight cases and three deaths. The cruise departed from Ushuaia in southern Argentina on 1 April and later reported cases of Andes hantavirus, a rare strain associated with possible human-to-human transmission.
