Swedish ambassador met with Cambodian labour minister

Ambassador Björn Häggmark underlined the importance of labour conditions and skills development during the meeting with Labour Minister Ith Samheng, on 13th January 2020.

The purpose was to discuss development in the employment and vocational training sectors in the Kingdom.

Mr Häggmark mentioned the importance of labour conditions and skills development during the meeting.

The Swedish ambassador said: “The respect for human rights and protection of the environment are essential,”

“They are important for countries who depend on exports like Sweden and Cambodia.The respect for human rights and protection of the environment are essential,”

“Workers must be able to have their voices heard and rights respected,”

“Swedish development cooperation with Cambodia is partly dedicated to labour relations, where freedom of association and assembly are important foundations. Also, in the future a human rights based approach will be at the centre of the cooperation.”

Nguy Rith, an undersecretary of state at the ministry, told reporters after the meeting,

“The Labour Ministry and Swedish Embassy are committed to continuing cooperation in creating labour centres,” Mr. Rith said. “These centres will provide employment opportunities, services and consultation for our youths.”

Mr Rith said the Kingdom will continue to support the Swedish government’s Global Deal initiative.’

The Global Deal initiative is a form of partnership with the objective of jointly addressing challenges in the global labour market and enabling all people to benefit from globalisation, according to its website, adding 20 countries, including Cambodia, are associated partners.

Aside from working with governments, it works with major trade unions and business in each country.

Mr Samheng and Mr Häggmark were satisfied with the current results of employment and vocational training efforts in the Kingdom, according to Khmertimes.

“Both parties did not have something new to offer, but they will continue to strengthen cooperation,” Mr Rith said and qouted Mr Häggmark saying that the Swedish government has approved plans to expand labour and vocational training cooperation this year.
