A new direct cargo route between Oslo and Shanghai has been launched by China Southern Airlines. It is expected to carry a capacity of around 200 tonnes of salmon from Norway to China every week.
The route began operating on 19 August, using Boeing 777F freighters carrying 100 tonnes of salmon on each flight twice a week.
“For fresh seafood where every hour counts, direct air freight has great value,” said Eva Beate Lande, cargo director at Avinor.
Five cargo routes connect Norway to China directly, with 13 departures a week, according to Avinor. China is Norway’s third largest seafood market with exports reaching 178,000 tonnes in 2025 worth NOK 12.3 billion (€1.13 billion).
According to Lars Tømte, air freight director at Mowi, the new service would strengthen the Norway-Shanghai trade connection.
“The new China Southern route gives access to valuable capacity that is important for the seafood industry, and we look forward to exploring the opportunities this opens up,” he said.
China Southern’s Freight operations in Oslo will be handled by Oslo Seafood & Cargo Center.
