Nokia will upgrade key Southeast Asian subsea cable network

Finnish telecom company Nokia has been selected to upgrade the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) subsea cable system, strengthening digital connectivity between Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

The project will be carried out with Thai telecom provider Symphony Communication, which operates the cable. Nokia will replace existing equipment with new optical networking technology that will increase capacity and improve network performance.

The MCT cable is the only submarine cable landing in Rayong, Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), an area that has attracted major investments in data centres and digital infrastructure. According to Thailand’s Board of Investment, more than USD 23 billion has been committed to data centre projects across the country.

Nokia said the upgrade will triple the cable’s capacity and support growing demand from AI, cloud computing and other digital services. The company also said its technology will reduce network power consumption by up to 60 percent.

“This upgrade will help deliver advanced, trusted connectivity across Southeast Asia and support Thailand’s ambition to become a regional hub for AI and cloud-driven digital services,” said Nokia Thailand Country Manager Ajay Sharma.
