Norway and Indonesia sign new partnership declaration

Norway and Indonesia have signed a joint declaration on a “Partnership for a Prosperous and Sustainable Future,” dated 26 January 2026. The declaration was agreed by Indonesia’s foreign minister and Norway’s foreign minister.

The two sides said they want to deepen cooperation after a 2010 declaration signed in Jakarta, with earlier focus areas including climate and forests, energy, democracy and human rights, peace and disarmament, global health, research and trade.

In the new declaration, the ministers said they will cooperate on international affairs, including regional peace and security, democracy and human rights, and efforts against human trafficking, cyber threats and transnational organised crime. Indonesia also expressed support for Norway’s enhanced engagement with ASEAN, and the countries said they will establish regular dialogues on international development policy and ocean issues.

On climate and environment, the ministers reaffirmed the bilateral climate and forest partnership and said they will intensify efforts related to deforestation, emissions reductions from forestry and land use, and a green economy. They also said they will explore cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and expand collaboration on ocean issues such as plastic pollution, sustainable fisheries and green shipping.
The declaration also highlights continued energy cooperation through the bilateral Energy Dialogue, which marked its 30th anniversary in 2025, covering areas including renewables, hydrogen, energy security and carbon capture and storage. The ministers also pointed to cooperation on sustainable agriculture and food systems, education and research, and trade and investment, including through the Indonesia–EFTA Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, and said the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation will meet at least every two years.
