Sweden has pledged USD 12.7 million in humanitarian assistance to support more than a million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar and vulnerable host communities in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
According to the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka, the funding will be disbursed through eight humanitarian partners: UNHCR, WFP, Norwegian Refugee Council, Islamic Relief, Action Against Hunger, Save the Children, and the International Rescue Committee. The aid will help provide food assistance, nutrition support, protection services, healthcare, emergency education, water and sanitation, and services for survivors of gender-based violence and child protection.
“This year, we are increasing our initial allocation compared to last year, because of growing humanitarian needs, not least in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar,” said Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks.
The ambassador reiterated Sweden’s longstanding support:
“Sweden stands firmly with Bangladesh in responding to humanitarian needs in the country, including those of Rohingya refugees, just as we have for the past seven years,” says Nicolas.
In addition to the direct support through international agencies, Sweden is also partnering with Start Fund Bangladesh. This collaboration enables 26 local and national organisations to respond more rapidly to emergencies on the ground.
The Swedish government highlighted that the contribution reflects its commitment to the principles of good humanitarian donorship, enhancing the UN’s ability to act strategically and swiftly in crises.
Sweden remains one of the world’s largest humanitarian donors and a consistent provider of core funding to key UN bodies, including UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
