Immigration police officer at Arlanda Airport in Sweden.

A Swedish man in his 20s, suspected of planning an attack on a restaurant in Umeå, was deported from Thailand and arrested upon arrival at Arlanda Airport on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, according to SVT Nyheter.

The man was as recently as 27 January 2025 declared wanted by the Swedish authorities as he was detained in absentia. Following his apprehension in Thailand, he was escorted by Thai police on a flight bound for Sweden, where Swedish officers took over at Arlanda Airport.

According to Thomas Palmgren, head of investigations at the Västerbotten police department, the handover between Thai and Swedish authorities went smoothly:

“The process of bringing him back to Sweden has gone well, and we are satisfied with how the transfer was handled,” says Palmgren to SVT Nyheter.

The man now faces charges under Swedish law on flammable and explosive materials, with authorities alleging that he was involved in handling fragmentation bombs intended for transport from Skellefteå to Umeå. According to investigators, these explosives were meant to be used against a restaurant and a vehicle.

A hearing for the deported suspect is scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2025, at the Skellefteå District Court, where he will be formally questioned in the presence of legal counsel. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the intended target in Umeå, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

More details can be found in the original report on SVT Nyheter.
