A Thai wood delegation is currently visiting Sweden to study the country’s leading practices in sustainable forestry and timber-based construction. The visit, taking place from 23 to 29 November 2025, forms part of Woodlife Business — an initiative led by the Swedish Institute, with the Thai study visit organised in cooperation with the Swedish Forest Agency and Växjö Linnaeus Science Park.

On Sunday 23 November, Thailand’s Ambassador to Sweden, Arunrung Phothong Humphreys, hosted a networking luncheon for the delegation at the Ambassador’s Residence in Stockholm. The group consists of representatives from Thailand’s public sector, private companies, academia and civil society involved in forest management and the forest-based industry.

The luncheon brought the Thai delegation together with representatives from the Swedish Institute, the Swedish Forest Agency (Skogsstyrelsen), Business Sweden and the Embassy of Sweden in Thailand. According to the Royal Thai Embassy, the Ambassador expressed appreciation to Team Sweden for supporting the visit, which aims to introduce the delegation to Sweden’s forestry ecosystem, support academic exchange and explore future business collaboration.

Counsellor Natouch Thammanuruk and officers from the Thailand and Nordic Countries Innovation Unit (TNIU) provided a briefing on the unit’s roles, mission and planned activities.

As part of their programme, the delegation is visiting Växjö — internationally recognised for its work in sustainable timber construction and forestry. Växjö Linnaeus Science Park is coordinating the four-day programme, which includes meetings with companies across the wood and forestry value chain and a visit to Linnaeus University’s timber laboratory.

Woodlife Business Thailand builds on earlier cooperation between Thai and Swedish partners, including the seminar “Jump-Start Wood City: From Local Empowerment to Global Partnerships,” held in Phrae Province in August 2025.

The project is one of Europe’s largest residential developments built with Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT).

Växjö is recognized as one of Europe’s greenest cities, known for its extensive use of timber in new construction. The buildings feature expansive balconies and a hybrid construction of concrete for the lower floors and CLT for the upper floors.

The development includes 144 apartments, a preschool, and communal facilities, designed around a shared courtyard near Lake Trummen.

Thailand and Sweden have been expanding their cooperation on sustainable forestry and wood-based development throughout 2025.

In January, Sweden supported the development of Phrae Province as Thailand’s sustainable wood city, with contributions from Sida and the LoCoFoRest programme.

In July, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok announced that the Woodlife Sweden exhibition would open in Phrae on 15 August, highlighting Swedish innovation in timber architecture and sustainable wood use.

The exhibition was followed in August by the Thailand–Sweden Sustainable Development Forum in Phrae, where officials and experts from both countries discussed long-term collaboration in sustainable forestry.

Cooperation continued ahead of the sustainability forum, with both governments emphasising joint work in forest management and green development.
