Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen and Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Tørnæs express critism after Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have been sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment in Myanmar.

“They should be released immediately, and their sentences reviewed. Press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and must be protected at all times,” writes Anders Samuelsen on Twitter.

Ulla Tørnæs shares his point of view:
“Deeply dissappointed by guilty verdict in Reuters trial. Sentence should be reviewed. Call on government of Myanmar to protect press freedom as pillar of democracy,” she writes on Twitter.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were detained in Myanmar on 12 December 2017. At the time of their arrests, they had been working on an investigation into the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslim men and boys in a village in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. On 3 September 2018 they were found guilty of breaching the Official Secrets Act, under laws introduced in 1923 under British rule.
