Bird flu bans Danish chicken in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has suspended poultry and egg imports from Guldborgsund in Denmark after a highly pathogenic H5N1 outbreak.

Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety has ordered an immediate suspension of poultry meat, eggs, and related products from Guldborgsund Municipality in Denmark, the government agency has announced in a press release.

The move follows a WOAH notification about a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in the Danish municipality.

Hong Kong imported about 450 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Denmark last year. It also imported about 210,000 poultry eggs, according to official statistics cited by the agency.

The Centre for Food Safety said it has contacted Danish authorities. It will monitor updates from WOAH and relevant agencies.
