Malaysia backs Denmark and EU over US Greenland pressure, Anwar tells Parliament

Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in Parliament on 20 January that Malaysia supports Denmark and the EU’s position on Greenland.

During PM Question Time, Anwar said countries can negotiate, but should not “conquer” a sovereign state.

His remarks came after the US president said he would impose a new 10 per cent levy on goods from eight allied European nations if they oppose a proposed takeover of Greenland.

In a joint statement on 19 January, the eight countries said they “stand in full solidarity” with Denmark and the people of Greenland, after the tariff threat.

The US president also refused to rule out using force, while insisting he would press ahead with the proposed levies.
