Malaysia’s OMS Group orders two Ulstein cable-laying vessels for 2028 delivery

Malaysia’s OMS Group has ordered two Ulstein-designed cable-laying vessels, due to enter service in 2028.

Malaysian subsea digital infrastructure provider OMS Group has signed contracts with Norway’s Ulstein to design and build two cable-laying vessels.

OMS Group said the order is aimed at meeting growing demand for high-capacity submarine cable systems. The vessels are scheduled to enter service in 2028.

The ships will be based on Ulstein’s SX252 design and focus on sustainability and lower carbon emissions. Each vessel is planned to be 130 metres long and 22 metres wide.

Ulstein said the vessels will carry up to 6,500 tonnes of cable and house 75 people. The design includes multiple cable tanks, an enclosed cable-deck hangar, and equipment for ROV and plough operations.

OMS Group founder and chairman Lim Soon Foo said the fleet expansion supports the global digital economy.
