A climate partnership worth millions is tightening the bond between Norway and Indonesia as both countries push toward major emission cuts.

During a visit to Voice of Indonesia in Jakarta, the Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia, Rut Krüger Giverin, praised Indonesia for its climate ambition and ownership of its net-zero roadmap, RRI Voice of Indonesia reports.

“This is a goal that we are very happy to support. For us, it’s also very important that this is Indonesia’s own plan. So it’s not something we’re imposing from the outside,” said Rut Krüger Giverin.

She highlighted that cooperation between Norway and Indonesia has expanded beyond funding into broader climate cooperation, especially in carbon markets.

“I think in addition to just the transactions or the payments that we do in support of Indonesia’s work, we also have a very good strategic collaboration on related issues in the forest and land-use sector, such as the carbon markets,” she said.

The partnership supports Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 program, which aims to reduce emissions through forest and land-use reforms. The cooperation has been in place since 2022 under a Memorandum of Understanding worth around 216 million dollars.
