A 62-year-old Norwegian man has been sentenced to eight months in prison for serious social security fraud. He received work assessment allowance from Norway’s welfare agency, Nav, while living in Thailand.
For several years, he did not report that he spent most of his time outside Norway. This failure violated his reporting obligation. The Vestfold District Court found that he received a total of 730,000 Norwegian kroner that he was not entitled to, as he did not meet the criteria for the benefit.
During the trial, the man partially admitted guilt. He acknowledged that he had incorrectly reported his residency status. The eight-month sentence reflects the seriousness of the financial fraud, which occurred over three years.
