Sweden, EU backup Ukraine after meeting with Trump

Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson has reaffirmed Sweden’s support for Ukraine, emphasizing the broader implications of Russia’s aggression for the Nordic and Baltic regions, as well as the rest of Europe, after a meeting 28 February 2025 at the oval office in Washington with Donald Trump which did not end well.

“You are not only fighting for your freedom but also for all of Europe’s,” Kristersson wrote on X, underlining the strategic importance of Ukraine’s resistance against Russian military advances. European leaders from Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and Spain, among others, have also voiced their continued support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. The message comes as European nations reassess their defense commitments and aid contributions in response to the war.

The Nordic countries have been particularly vocal in their backing of Ukraine. Finland and Sweden, both of which have shifted their security policies in response to Russia’s actions, have increased military assistance and political backing for Kyiv. Denmark and Norway have similarly pledged further aid, reinforcing the region’s unified stance against Russian aggression.

As Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty, Nordic and Baltic leaders stress that the conflict’s outcome will have far-reaching consequences for European security. The show of solidarity underscores Europe’s collective effort to deter further destabilization in the region.
