Danida Supports Electronic Traceability System for Vietnamese Food Exporters

A seminar on an ‘Electronic Traceability’ system called ‘TraceVerified’ was held at VIETFISH 2012 on June 26. The system has been developed with the support from Danida, the development cooperation programme between Vietnam and Denmark.

In cooperation with Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Sac Ky Hai Dang (EDC-HD), a leading private sector provider of Testing and Technical Consulting Services, organized a Seminar on “Electronic Traceability” and demonstrated the practical use of “TraceVerified” system that can produce “TraceReport”, accessible through any Smartphone using the simple Barcode Squares printed on the cartons.

With the support of Danida-funded Business Sector Programme, the system has been developed with the aim to serve the increasing demand for better traceability of food products by global food export markets through a clear and transparent chain of custody. Given the rapidly evolving traceability requirements, it is necessary for the Vietnamese food exporters to take a leap and use the modern and flexible “Electronic Traceability” systems rather than struggle with the traditional “Paper‐based Traceability” that is yet to be introduced in majority of the food export value chains of Vietnam. The unique feature of “TraceVerified” is that information provided in the “Electronic Traceability” is verified by experts making it very authentic. Currently, four pilot users (Catfish processors and exporters) are testing the system before it is ready for commercial use.

“The new ‘Electronic Traceability’ system is crucial for Vietnam to face the increasing challenges on account of ‘Technical Barriers for Trade’ that the EU and US markets are imposing,” said Dr. Nguyen Huu Dzung, Vice-Chairman of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, at the seminar.
