Denmark’s largest travel agency, Star Tour, has sold about 20 pct. less winter trips to Phuket than they did in the same period last year, Sales Director Stig Elling tells the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten (JP). At the same time, he feels that Danes no longer want to live close to the beaches in fear of new Tsunamis.
“We are selling more trips to other parts of Thailand, but the trips to Phuket have dropped almost 20 pct. If it continues we will have to contact the Thai authorities in order to get the message across to people that Thailand isn’t dangerous,” says Stig Elling to JP.
Star Tour is expecting to send approximately 10,000 Danes to Thailand during the next winter season – about half of these to Southern Thailand.
The same tendencies are felt by Jan Lockhardt, Director of Apollo/Kuoni and chairman of the biggest travel agencies in Denmark.
“We are also experiencing a minus of about 20 pct., while the rest of Thailand sells easily,” he tells JP.
