Danish Minister Tornaes Co-Hosts Conference on the Mekong River Commission

Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Ms. Ulla Tørnæs, on 23-24 April 2007 co-hosted an International Conference on the Mekong River Commission (MRC) together with Mr. Cao Duc Phat, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development and Chairman of the MRC Council for 2006-2007.
The Mekong River provides the livelihoods to more than 60 million people in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam. It is therefore vital to ensure that the water resources are used in a sustainable manner. The Mekong River Commission is a unique intergovernmental cooperation between the four countries, which aims at exactly that. This cooperation is supported by a number of donors.
In this connection Minister Tørnæs states:
I am very satisfied with the results of the conference and happy to note the great commitment from the countries in the region, donors and partners to strengthen the role and capacity of the Mekong River Commission. I believe, that we have created an important platform for the future cooperation with the countries and actors in the region and I am pleased that Denmark as co-host of the conference has provided important support to the Mekong countries in these efforts. We will continue to do this and as such have just announced Denmark’s pledge to provide 3 million DKK or 535,000 USD in support of capacity building efforts in the Secretariat of the Mekong River Commission.”
