Danish business leader reaffirms confidence in China in letter to President Xi

A Danish business leader, Simon Lichtenberg, has received a reply from Chinese President Xi Jinping after writing a letter on behalf of the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China.

Danish business leader Simon Lichtenberg has expressed renewed confidence in the Chinese market on behalf of the Danish business community, in a letter addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping — and has since received a formal reply from the Chinese leader.

Lichtenberg, the Founding Chairman of the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China and CEO of Trayton Group, appeared in an interview on Chinese state media outlet CGTN on Thursday 15 May 2025, where he elaborated on the message and timing of the letter.

According to Lichtenberg, the letter was intended to reaffirm the long-standing relationship between Denmark and China and to acknowledge China’s continued reforms and opening-up policies. He emphasized that Danish companies have maintained a presence in China for over seven decades and remain committed to contributing to China’s future development.

“We wanted to let President Xi know that we appreciate the openness and the positive business environment that China has provided over the years,” says Lichtenberg.

He noted that Danish firms are actively involved in supporting China’s transition to a greener and more sustainable economy and see opportunities for cooperation in fields such as innovation, environmental technology, and high-quality manufacturing.

Lichtenberg also highlighted the importance of mutual respect and dialogue, saying these principles are essential for maintaining strong bilateral relations.

“Danish businesses are here for the long term, and we believe in the benefits of open cooperation,” he adds.

According to CGTN, the Chinese President formally replied to the letter, acknowledging the contributions of Danish enterprises in China. The letter was written on behalf of the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China, which Lichtenberg helped found.

The exchange comes at a time of global economic uncertainty, and Lichtenberg’s comments are seen as a vote of confidence in China’s role as a reliable partner for Nordic businesses.
