What went wrong for Aung San Suu Kyi?

The online media TheArtsDesk.com carried on Friday 26 July 2019 an interview with Danish documentalist Karen Stokkendal Poulsen about her her film ‘On the Inside of a Military Dictatorship’.

The documentary tackles the question, how Aung San Suu Kyi could turn from a heroic status on the international stage perhaps surpassed only by Nelson Mandela to a vilain as she said nothing when her country’s military started a persecution of the minority Rohingya Muslims that quickly became genocide.

The documentary is charting Myanmar’s complex transition to democracy after 50 years of military dictatorship, focussing on Aung San Suu Kyi’s pact with the devil – the generals – to ensure she follow her late father’s footsteps and lead the country.

“I really think that Aung San Suu Kyi believes she was born with a destiny. And the people of Burma believe the same,” she says in the interview.
