Danish Embassy to open its doors in Myanmar on Aug 1

Ambassador Mikael Hemniti Winther recently visited Myanmar, among other things, to prepare for the opening of the Danish embassy in Yangon on the 1st of August. During the visit, the Ambassador was accompanied by Charge d’Affaires Ulrich Sørensen, and they met with representatives from the Myanmar Government; the Chairman of Parliament’s Upper House, Thura U Shwe Mann, Foreign Minister, U Wunna Maung Lwin, Minister in the President’s office, U Soe Thane and economic adviser to the president, U Zaw Oo.

The Ambassador and the Charge d’Affaires also had meetings with opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the 88 Generation, U Ko Ko Gyi, and the former political prisoner and independent political analyst Khin Zaw Win.

The meetings were used to discuss Myanmar’s democratic development, with particular focus on constitutional changes, ethnic conflict and the upcoming elections in 2015, as well as the growing Danish engagement in Myanmar. The meetings showed that relations between Denmark and Myanmar continue to be strong, and that the Danish support to the democratic development in Myanmar is appreciated. With the opening of an Embassy in Yangon the diplomatic relations between the two countries will be further strengthened.
