Denmark raises cyber threat level for telecom sector, cites espionage risks from China

Denmark’s Centre for Cyber Security (CFCS) announced on 13 March 2025 that it has raised the cyber threat level for the telecommunications sector from medium to high. The decision follows repeated cyber espionage attempts targeting Europe’s telecom industry.

According to the CFCS assessment, foreign state-backed hackers, particularly from China, Russia, and Iran, have been actively targeting the telecommunications sector. CFCS Director Laila Reenberg emphasized the critical role of telecommunications in both professional and private contexts, underscoring the necessity for robust cybersecurity measures.

Denmark has previously expressed concerns about cyber threats, including allegations in 2023 that Huawei engaged in espionage against Danish telecom group TDC during a 5G network contract bid. The latest move highlights Denmark’s increasing focus on securing its digital infrastructure from foreign cyber threats.
