Bùi Thanh Sơn, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussed Vietnam-EU trade relations with Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission, on October 21, 2024. The meeting took place in Ho Chi Minh City during the Green Economy Forum & Exhibition (GEFE).
During their discussions, Deputy Prime Minister Sơn emphasized Vietnam’s strong partnership with the EU. He noted that Vietnam is the only ASEAN country to have a full cooperation framework with the bloc. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which has greatly boosted trade and investment.
As both regions prepare to celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, Sơn expressed hope for stronger ties and ongoing collaboration. He proposed increasing high-level exchanges and effectively implementing cooperation among ministries and sectors.
Sơn also discussed the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and its potential to create new opportunities for bilateral trade and investment, particularly in areas such as environmental sustainability and the green transition. He urged the European Commission to promptly lift the “yellow card” on Vietnamese seafood exports related to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices, which would support Vietnam’s efforts in sustainable fisheries development.
On the same day, Sơn met with Ville Tapani Tavio, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development. He valued Finland’s support and emphasized the desire to deepen bilateral cooperation in climate action and education.
