Ericsson and Malaysia’s DNB trial 5G tool to detect scam transmitters

Ericsson and Malaysia’s DNB say they trialled 5G-based detection of fake base stations to reduce scam messages.

Swedish telecom firm Ericsson and Malaysia’s 5G network provider Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) say they deployed scam-message detection in DNB’s network, in a press release on 3 March.

The companies said the capability can detect illegal transmitters used to impersonate mobile base stations and send fraudulent messages.

Ericsson said the trial was announced at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona on 3 March.

DNB and Ericsson said the system uses network software and Ericsson Security Manager to identify suspicious activity without manual tracing.

The press release cited a GSMA ASEAN Consumer Scam Report 2025 and said Malaysia blocked 2.1 billion suspicious calls and messages from 2022 to August 2025.
