Nordic and European allies back Denmark amid renewed US pressure over Greenland

Denmark has received public backing from several Nordic and European allies after renewed US tariff threats linked to Washington’s long-standing interest in Greenland.

In a joint statement issued on January 18, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their commitment to Arctic security and expressed full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.

The statement stressed that recent Danish-led military exercises in the Arctic, carried out with NATO allies, pose no threat and are part of broader efforts to strengthen regional security. It also underlined that any dialogue over Greenland must be grounded in respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The allied countries warned that tariff threats could undermine transatlantic relations and risk triggering what they described as a “dangerous downward spiral,” while pledging to remain united and coordinated in their response.

The joint declaration comes amid renewed rhetoric from US President Donald Trump on Greenland, an issue Danish leaders have repeatedly rejected, insisting that the island’s future can only be decided by Greenlanders themselves.
