A Norwegian man has reported an unsettling incident involving an assault by a driver linked to a popular ride-hailing app in Phuket. The altercation took place early on December 30, resulting in several injuries for the victim.

Accompanied by his friend, Ms. Thanatphon Khongcharoen, 44, Mr. Egil Christian Andresen, 57, made his way to Karon Police Station to file an official complaint regarding the attack. Mr. Andresen explained that a dispute over the destination prompted the confrontation with the driver.

The conflict began at approximately 5:05 AM when Mr. Andresen arranged a ride to his lodging near Patak Soi 1, roughly one kilometer away from the designated pick-up area in front of a jewelry store. Allegedly, the driver questioned whether Mr. Andresen intended to head to Phuket International Airport instead, creating confusion. Frustrated by the exchange, Mr. Andresen requested to exit the vehicle.

As he stepped out, the driver allegedly grabbed a nearby sign and struck Mr. Andresen multiple times. The assault left him with injuries, including cuts and bruises to his left temple, ear, face, and elbows. Following the incident, Mr. Andresen sought medical attention and supplied police with evidence, including CCTV footage that corroborated his report.

Expressing disbelief

Expressing his disbelief at the violent encounter, Mr. Andresen remarked, “I have worked as a taxi driver in Norway for over 30 years and have never harmed or been harmed by a passenger. In my home country, such conduct automatically leads to the revocation of a driver’s public transport license for life.”

Despite this traumatic event, Mr. Andresen noted that he has visited Phuket multiple times and always appreciated the tranquility of Karon and the island’s scenic beauty. He stays hopeful that justice will prevail in this case.

Local law enforcement has initiated an investigation and is actively working to identify and locate the driver involved in the incident.
