The Philippines–Finland Friendship Week has opened in Mandaluyong City to mark 70 years of bilateral ties. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) hosts the celebration, highlighting growing labour and cultural cooperation between Manila and Helsinki.
DMW Undersecretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay said both countries are finalising a new bilateral labour agreement. The deal will focus on ethical recruitment, skills development and strong protection for Filipino workers in Finland.
A recent joint declaration commits both sides to fair and sustainable labour mobility. The agreement is expected to support Finland’s need for workers in healthcare, IT, services and retail, while providing clear pathways for overseas Filipino workers.
Finnish ambassador Saija Nurminen praised Filipino workers’ contribution to Finland’s economy and society. She called the Philippines a key partner and a valued source of hardworking and adaptable employees.
There are currently more than 16000 Filipinos in Finland, including 11500 deployed in 2024 alone. As part of Friendship Week, the DMW will hold a jobs fair at SM Megamall for welders, machinists, factory workers, cleaners and other technical roles.
