Last week, Ann Måwe, Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam, visited Son La & Dien Bien provinces on a field trip.

The trip was with The International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) as part of their 13 years long project “Market-based Agroforestry for Livelihoods, Sustainable Development & Resilience in Smallholder Farming on Sloping Land in the Montane Areas of Mainland Southeast Asia.”

Swedish Research Council and FORMAS, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, funded the project and the whole concept is set to build on a long tradition of Swedish engagement in Vietnamese agriculture and forestry, the Embassy of Sweden in Hanoi writes on its Facebook page.

Research is the key
On the trip, researchers presented their findings and engaged in group discussions with local farmers as well as visiting exemplary landscapes of the area. And research is important, taking each of the countries climate goals in consideration, the Embassy said:
“Research, interventions based on evidence and thorough international cooperation will be needed as we move towards more sustainable societies and if we are to meet our commitments to become climate neutral by the mid-century – a commitment made by both Sweden and Vietnam.”
Besides visiting two provinces, the Ambassador met with the Chairman of Dien Bien People’s Committee, Mr. Le Thanh Do, sharing thoughts on the project and discussing future proposals for the cooperation.

“All in all amazing days in this remote but “must visit” province. More to follow as we digest all the impressions,” Ambassador Ann Måwe wrote on her socials about the trip.
