On 27 October the Embassy of Sweden, Singapore participated in a beach cleanup activity at the Changi Coastal Walk organized by the EU delegation in Singapore under the headline ‘Together for the Ocean’. The aim of this activity was to signal the importance that the EU and its member states attach to the fight against plastic waste and harmful plastic litter in the oceans. The fifth global Oceans Conference mean while take place in Bali.
The first ever European Strategy for Plastics was adopted on January 2018 and earlier this month the European Parliament voted for a ban on single-use plastics in a bid to mitigate ocean pollution. This move will ban single-use plastic items including cotton buds, cutlery, plates, straws, drink stirrers and balloon sticks in all EU countries by 2021.
