Thailand overtakes Japan and South Korea as key Asian market for Norwegian salmon

Thailand has overtaken Japan and South Korea as Norway’s second-largest Asian salmon market, with rising imports and 73 percent share.

Thailand has become one of the fastest-growing Asian markets for Norwegian salmon and trout in 2025. The country now takes higher combined volumes than Japan and South Korea and is Norway’s second-largest Asian market by volume.

Norwegian exporters have increased their market share in Thailand to more than 73 percent so far this year. According to the Norwegian Seafood Council, the category for Atlantic salmon and trout has grown by 8 percent in 2025.

Thailand’s seafood industry imports Norwegian salmon both for local consumption and for re-export through its processing sector. The market favours specific sizes and specifications, reinforcing Thailand’s role as a regional hub for Norwegian aquaculture products in Southeast Asia.

Analysts note that Thailand’s growth comes as Norway’s salmon export share to the EU is declining. In November, the EU accounted for 61 percent of export value, down from 66 percent last year, while Asia’s share rose to 21 percent.
