Sweden Donates P5M To Philippines Hosting Of Migration Forum

Philippine
Ambassador to Sweden Maria Zeneida Angara Collinson receives a P5 million
donation for the GFMD forum from Sweden‘s Minister for Migration and
Asylum Policy Tobias Billström.
    The
government of Sweden will be
providing P5 million in assistance for the Philippines‘ hosting of the 2nd
meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) in October
scheduled on October 27 to 30.
    The
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expects around 150 countries will
participate in the second GFMD.
    Philippine
Ambassador to Sweden Maria Zeneida Angara Collinson commended the positive role
of Sweden
as a member of the GFMD’s Friends of the Forum and the GFMD’s steering group.

    Sweden‘s Minister for Migration and Asylum
Policy Tobias Billström underscored Sweden‘s continuing commitment to
play an active role in migration issues.
    He said Sweden‘s financial contribution to the GFMD in Manila would help
facilitate broad-based participation on an issue of significant importance to
both labour-sending and receiving countries.

    Sweden‘s contribution to the 2nd Meeting
of the GFMD will be used to sponsor the participation of representatives from
developing countries.
    The GFMD
seeks to complement efforts at the United Nations to protect and advance the
rights of migrant workers.
    The first
GFMD was held in Brussels, Belgium in July 2007. Government
and civil society delegates from 139 countries participated.
