deadly viral diseases of the popular black tiger shrimp affecting the
livelihoods of thousands of rural households. The implementation of the
pacific white shrimp from Hawaii has turned out to be a successful
solution to the problem.
tiger shrimp, Thanh Thanh JSC of Khanh Hoa province has imported 800
Parent Breeders of genetically disease free Pacific White Shrimp from
Hawaii and adapted them to the environment of Vietnam with support from
the Danida Business Sector Programme.
Foreign
technical experts have supported Thanh Thanh JSC to successfully
multiply the Parent Breeders to produce over 10,000 pieces of brood
stock for supply to local hatcheries. During the adaptation process,
technical and extension staff of Thanh Thanh JSC has been taught
advanced techniques by foreign experts for multiplication of algae for
feeding shrimp larvae, raising brood stock, breeding, hatching and
raising nauplii and production of post larvae without using any
antibiotics.
Danida
support has, through training and technical assistance to this risky
but important venture, helped Thanh Thanh JSC produce and supply (till
date) over 500 million good quality nauplii to hatcheries in Khanh Hoa,
Ninh Thuan provinces and approximately 200 million post larvae to
aquaculture farmers in Khanh Hoa, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen provinces and Ho
Chi Minh City. On-site training and the establishment of a demonstration
and training farm has helped the farmers adapt their farming methods to
the new imported breed.
This
initiative supported by Danida has benefited several thousands of
aquaculture farmers who earlier depended on black tiger shrimp until the
farms were devastated by the losses and were forced to keep their ponds
empty while looking for alternatives to their livelihoods and an
opportunity to recoup their losses.
The
demonstration of the commercial benefits of the new breed is expected
to lead to replication in other provinces whereby it can reach thousands
of aquaculture farmers.
