Sweden Seek Closer Ties to Asean

Sweden newly-officiated envoy to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) expressed the nations’ interests of strengthening cooperation between their countries and the organisation. 


Quoting a statement issued by Asean on Wednesday, China’s Xinhua news agency reported that the the two envoys paid a courtesy call to Asean Secretary General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, conveying that their countries are seeking closer ties with Asean, as well as keen on strengthening their cooperation with the region.

Presenting her Letter of Credentials as the Ambassador to Asean, Ambassador Ewa Polano from Sweden informed Dr Surin Pitsuwan that the Swedish government was pleased with Asean’s development, particularly the establishment of the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

Sweden, in addition, is interested to strengthen cooperation with Asean in the areas of human rights, democracy, sustainable development, climate change and sustainable green city development.
