Finland has allocated 2.3 million USD in additional funding to support Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR.
The funding comes as humanitarian agencies warn of worsening conditions in the overcrowded refugee camps in southeastern Bangladesh, where around 1.2 million Rohingya refugees continue to live after fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar.
UNHCR said the Finnish contribution will help fund education, skills development and resilience programmes. The agency described the support as particularly important as international funding for the Rohingya response continues to decline.
The refugee camps have also seen the arrival of around 150,000 new refugees since early 2024. Many are still living without proper shelter due to limited space and resources, according to UNHCR.
UNHCR’s representative in Bangladesh, Ivo Freijsen, said Finland’s increased contribution comes at a critical time as aid agencies face growing challenges, including funding shortages, deteriorating camp conditions and continued instability in Myanmar.
The 2026 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya crisis is seeking 710.5 million $ to support both refugees and local Bangladeshi communities affected by the prolonged humanitarian situation.
