Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat and eggs from Guldborgsund Municipality in Denmark. The move follows an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health.
The decision was announced on 22 April by Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety. Authorities said the suspension took immediate effect to protect public health.
Denmark exported around 450 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 210,000 eggs to Hong Kong last year. The suspension targets products from the affected municipality rather than the entire country.
Hong Kong authorities said they have contacted Danish officials and will monitor developments closely. Further action will depend on updates from international and local animal health authorities.
In early March, Hong Kong suspended poultry imports from the Lolland municipality in Denmark, as well as regions in Sweden, Germany and Poland, due to avian flu.
