LEGO builds up to its sustainability goals in China brick by brick

LEGO is using its Jiaxing, China factory as a green testbed to drive global climate targets and sustainable materials.

Danish toy maker LEGO Group says its factory in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, has become central to the company’s global sustainability goals. The site, which opened in 2016 as LEGO’s first Asian factory, produces most of the LEGO products sold across Asia.

The latest measures in Jiaxing mark a significant step up in LEGO’s climate work. In 2024, the factory installed a new heat-recovery system that cut natural gas use by 50 percent, completed the switch from plastic to paper-based packaging lines, and signed a power purchase agreement to run on 100 percent renewable electricity. LEGO says the successful systems in China are now being extended to other parts of the factory and will inform upgrades at its factories in other regions.

Since 2020, the Jiaxing factory has installed over 20,000 rooftop solar panels and plans to expand the system by 2026. The company describes the site as a testing ground for new sustainability solutions that can later be rolled out across its global manufacturing network.

LEGO’s sustainability targets align closely with China’s own dual carbon goals. The company aims to reduce emissions by 37 percent by 2032 and reach net-zero by 2050. Investments in green initiatives grew 68 percent in 2024 compared to the year before.

LEGO has also begun using sugarcane-based bio-polyethylene and recycled materials for several product lines, showcased at the China International Import Expo in November. The company plans to make all its bricks from sustainable materials by 2032.
