The Philippines and Sweden signed a grant agreement on 5 February to develop national bus standards.

Swedfund will fund technical and performance standards for public utility buses, including minibuses. The work will use international best practices adapted to Philippine conditions.

Transport Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the partnership supports President Marcos’ goal to move more people. He also said the government is shifting toward a more commuter-centric transport approach.

Swedish Ambassador Anna Ferry said Sweden and the Philippines share priorities on safe and reliable public transport. She said the project combines international experience with local knowledge.

The grant will support a unified bus classification system and standard technical parameters for bus categories. Swedfund has also backed the EDSA Bus Rapid Transit project since 2018 with about SEK 10 million, plus SEK 3 million in 2025.
