Thailand waives overstay penalties for travellers hit by Middle East flight cancellations

Thailand is waiving overstay fines and offering 30-day extensions for travellers stranded by Middle East-related flight cancellations.

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau is waiving overstay fines for some foreign travellers stranded by flight disruptions linked to Middle East airspace closures.

The waiver applies to travellers whose permission to stay expired on or after 28 February 2026, when they are leaving Thailand. Travellers are expected to show proof that their flight was cancelled or could not operate.

If you can depart soon, go to the airport with your passport and evidence of the disruption. Immigration officials said overstay fines will be waived at departure for eligible cases.

If you cannot leave and need to stay legally, immigration can grant extensions of up to 30 days at a time. Reports say you may need a TM.7 application form, passport copies, and an embassy letter, or a recorded “statement of necessity” if a letter is not available.

For extensions, the reports say any existing overstay fines may need to be settled before the extension is processed. The measures are expected to remain in place until flight operations normalise.
