Volvo says latest Thailand vehicle fire was not caused by battery

Volvo Cars Thailand says a recent fire involving a Volvo XC60 on a Thai motorway did not originate from the vehicle’s battery system.

Volvo Cars Thailand says a recent fire involving a Volvo XC60 on a Thai motorway did not originate from the vehicle’s high-voltage battery system, according to an initial investigation, Bangkok Post reports.

The incident took place on Motorway M81 in Nakhon Pathom on 22 May. A family of four escaped safely after the plug-in hybrid SUV caught fire and was heavily damaged.

According to local media, the driver noticed a warning light on the dashboard before smoke began coming from the hood, followed by flames underneath the vehicle.

Volvo Car Thailand said preliminary examinations of images and information from the scene indicated the fire did not begin in the battery area. The company added that investigations are continuing to determine the exact cause.

The latest incident comes after recent scrutiny of Volvo’s electric vehicles in Thailand following two separate fires involving the EX30 model earlier this month.
