An ageing society is reshaping Thailand’s healthcare priorities

Thailand’s healthcare system is under growing pressure, and the issue is now appearing more clearly on the bilateral agenda between Thailand and Sweden.

This was reflected last week, when the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok hosted a healthcare roundtable with Swedish companies active in Thailand. The discussions focused on how the two countries could deepen cooperation in healthcare, with particular emphasis on innovation and sustainable healthcare systems. No concrete projects were announced.

The talks come as Thailand undergoes a rapid demographic shift. According to The Nation Thailand, the number of elderly Thais has already surpassed the number of children.

The ageing population is increasing demand for chronic care and long-term treatment, while public hospitals face rising costs, staff shortages and capacity constraints.

The challenge is no longer access alone. Efficiency, quality and sustainability have become central concerns.

Data from World Economics shows that Thailand’s old-age dependency ratio is rising, meaning fewer working-age citizens are supporting a growing elderly population. This is adding pressure to healthcare spending and hospital infrastructure.

Sweden has already been through a similar demographic transition. More than one in five Swedes is now aged 65 or older, compared with roughly one in six in Thailand.

According to the World Health Organization’s European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, Sweden has responded by strengthening primary care, emphasising prevention and integrating digital health solutions.

These areas overlap with Thailand’s current healthcare priorities and help explain Sweden’s interest in closer cooperation.

While the roundtable did not result in announced initiatives, it signals that healthcare is emerging as a more prominent area in Thailand–Sweden relations.
