Chulalongkorn University’s Thai Youth Orchestra (CHULA ThaiYO) will travel to Sweden this week to perform at events marking the 129th anniversary of King Chulalongkorn’s historic visit to Europe.
The university held a press conference and final rehearsal on 10 July before the group’s departure. According to Chulalongkorn University, it is the only Thai university invited to take part in this year’s commemoration in Sweden.
The delegation will visit Sweden from 16 to 23 July. It will perform on 19 July at the Thai Pavilion in Ragunda and participate in a royal tribute ceremony honouring King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V.
CHULA ThaiYO brings together students from Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Education and Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. The ensemble has trained under lecturers from both faculties, with the performances directed by National Artist Dr. Sirichaicharn Fachamroon.
The concert programme includes traditional Thai music and dance, a Khon performance from the Ramakien, royal classical dance, and original compositions. The finale will combine the Thai songs Ram Wong Loy Krathong and Serng Krapho with the Swedish folk song Små Grodorna as a musical tribute to the friendship between Thailand and Sweden.
The performances are being organised at the invitation of the Association for the Commemoration of King Chulalongkorn in Sweden. The event is held in cooperation with the Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm, the Municipality of Ragunda and the Thai community in Sweden.
Thailand’s ambassador to Sweden is expected to attend.
The Swedish visit marks CHULA ThaiYO’s fourth international cultural mission. The orchestra has previously performed in Japan, Peru and Indonesia.
Chulalongkorn University said the tour aims to promote Thai arts and culture abroad while strengthening cultural ties between Thailand and Sweden.
