The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Manila has raised concerns about the safety of environmental defenders in the Philippines. On their Facebook page, they shared a statement that coincides with a report from the international NGO Global Witness. This report reveals that, for the 11th consecutive year, the Philippines ranks as the most dangerous country in Asia for environmental advocates.
In 2023, ten environmental defenders suffered tragic killings, while seven disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The embassy expresses deep concern for these courageous individuals who tirelessly work to protect the environment and their communities.
Climate Action and International Efforts
Last week marked the International Day for Climate Action. On this day, the global community united to address urgent solutions to the climate crisis. The Philippines, an archipelago that remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, has taken proactive steps in climate action on both international and regional platforms.
Recently, the Philippines hosted the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR), focusing on cooperation to mitigate disaster risks. Furthermore, the country is set to host the UN Loss and Damage Fund Board to assist communities affected by climate change.
The Need for Protection
Despite these advancements, the need to protect environmental defenders remains urgent. A statement from various heads of missions, including those from Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, emphasizes their commitment to recognizing and safeguarding these unsung heroes.
In addition, the Phil Star shared that Philippine government’s intention to sign the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance deserves praise. This commitment represents a crucial step toward enhancing the safety of human rights defenders.
As the international community rallies behind climate action, it is essential to ensure the safety of those on the front lines of environmental protection. Today, thoughts are with the families of the victims. A collective commitment emerges to intensify efforts for their safety and for the environment they valiantly strive to protect.
