Norway’s ambassador to Vietnam, Hilde Solbakken, has highlighted marine spatial planning as a key tool for developing a sustainable ocean economy, drawing on Norway’s experience in fisheries, aquaculture and offshore industries.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Vietnam Sustainable Marine Economy Forum 2025 in Quang Ninh province, Solbakken pointed to integrated marine planning as a science-based approach to balancing different uses of ocean space, including fisheries, energy, tourism and environmental protection.
According to Vietnamese state media, the ambassador said Norway’s ocean economy plays a central role in the country’s exports and is built on long-term planning supported by data, regulation and cooperation between sectors.
She also referred to Norway’s experience in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, noting that strict monitoring, satellite technology and international cooperation have helped reduce such activity to very low levels.
At the forum, Solbakken highlighted ongoing cooperation between Norway and Vietnam in areas such as sustainable fisheries management, marine aquaculture and offshore wind development, including support for Vietnam’s marine spatial planning efforts in cooperation with international partners.
