Norwegian company Yara Clean Ammonia has signed a new agreement to explore supplying low-carbon ammonia as marine fuel in Singapore. The deal was made with Japan’s NYK Line and Singapore-based Golden Island.
The three companies have agreed on a non-binding term sheet to jointly study the marketing and supply of ammonia fuel for ships. The initiative supports efforts to reduce emissions in global shipping and aligns with Singapore’s ambitions as a major hub for cleaner marine fuels.
Yara Clean Ammonia brings expertise in ammonia production and handling, while NYK contributes shipping and technical experience. Golden Island adds more than 40 years of bunkering operations in Singapore, including fuel supply and logistics.
The partners began discussions in early 2024 and aim to launch operations within this decade. The project focuses on building infrastructure to support ammonia-powered vessels and expand the availability of low-emission fuels.
Ammonia is seen as a potential zero-emission marine fuel, as it does not release CO2 when burned. Singapore, the world’s largest bunkering port, is positioning itself at the centre of the transition to cleaner shipping fuels.
