Empty bottles are getting a second life in Singapore.
The city-state has launched Southeast Asia’s first nationwide deposit return scheme for beverage containers, targeting a waste stream of more than one billion bottles and cans used every year.
Across Singapore, new recycling machines are being rolled out, giving residents a simple way to return used containers.
The Norwegian company TOMRA Collection is behind part of the system, operating machines in central and north-eastern Singapore.
The scheme, known as the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS), is designed to increase recycling rates and improve the quality of collected materials.
Part of the system is operated by the Norwegian company TOMRA Collection, which is responsible for machines in central and north-eastern Singapore.
